What's the Difference?
Grade 1 (Uncontracted)
Each braille cell represents exactly one letter, number, or punctuation mark. Simple to learn but takes up more space. A Grade 1 braille book can be 3-4x larger than print.
Grade 2 (Contracted)
Uses 189 contractions and abbreviations to reduce space. "the" becomes a single cell (⠮), "and" becomes ⠯. It's the standard for published braille materials and ADA signage.
